Description

A delicious homemade version of the Sonic Double Smasher Burger featuring two thin smashed beef patties topped with melted cheddar cheese, fresh onions, and pickles on toasted soft buns with a tangy mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard spread.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Patties

  • 2 (4 oz) beef patties (80% lean)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)

Cheese

  • 2 slices cheddar cheese

Buns and Toppings

  • 2 soft burger buns
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • Pickle slices (optional)

Condiments

  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Skillet: Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  2. Season the Patties: Season both sides of the beef patties with salt and pepper.
  3. Smash the Patties: Place the patties on the hot skillet and immediately smash them down with a spatula to create thin patties. Cook for 2–3 minutes until the edges are crispy and caramelized.
  4. Flip and Add Cheese: Flip the patties and place a slice of cheddar cheese on each. Cook for another 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts and the patties are cooked through.
  5. Toast the Buns: While the patties cook, toast the burger buns in the same skillet for about 1 minute until lightly golden and crispy.
  6. Spread Condiments: Spread mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard evenly on the bottom halves of the toasted buns.
  7. Assemble the Burgers: Place the cheesy patties on the buns, and top with thinly sliced onions and pickles if using.
  8. Serve Immediately: Cover with the top halves of the buns and serve the burgers hot for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use an 80% lean beef blend for juicy, flavorful patties.
  • Smashing the patties thin helps achieve the classic crispy edges.
  • To enhance flavor, you can caramelize the onions separately if desired.
  • Pickles are optional but add a nice tangy crunch.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the melty cheese and crispy texture at their best.
