Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 500 grams Puff Pastry (Keep chilled until ready to use)
Filling
- 200 grams Nduja (Use high-quality nduja for best flavor)
- 100 grams Cheese (optional) (Shredded mozzarella or cheddar recommended)
Finish
- 1 large Egg (Beaten with a splash of water for egg wash)
- 1 pinch Salt (Use sparingly as nduja is salty)
- 1 pinch Black Pepper (Freshly ground for best flavor)
- 1 tablespoon Fresh Herbs (optional) (Chopped parsley or thyme recommended)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) to ensure it’s properly heated for baking the sausage rolls to a perfect golden brown.
- Soften Pastry: Let the chilled puff pastry sit for about 10 minutes at room temperature to soften slightly, making it easier to roll out without tearing.
- Roll Out Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry into a large rectangle approximately 0.5 cm thick, which provides a good base thickness for the rolls.
- Cut Strips: Cut the pastry into long strips, roughly 10 cm wide, to create the individual sausage roll shapes.
- Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the spicy nduja sausage with shredded cheese if using. Mix well for an even, cheesy spicy filling.
- Fill Pastry Strips: Place a generous spoonful of the nduja mixture along one edge of each pastry strip, making sure to leave edges free for sealing.
- Roll and Secure: Roll the pastry over the filling, tucking in the sides carefully to create a secure, enclosed roll that will hold together during baking.
- Repeat Filling and Rolling: Continue filling and rolling the remaining pastry strips until all the filling is used.
- Prepare for Baking: Place the rolls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking and allow even cooking.
- Egg Wash and Seasoning: Brush the tops of each roll generously with beaten egg wash to promote browning, then lightly sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper for additional flavor.
- Bake Rolls: Bake the sausage rolls in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until they are puffed up and golden brown.
- Cool Slightly: Allow the rolls to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving to let the filling set and avoid burning your mouth.
Notes
- Use high-quality spicy nduja for the most flavorful rolls.
- The cheese is optional but adds a nice melty texture and balances the spiciness.
- Keep puff pastry chilled until just before rolling to make handling easier.
- Egg wash is key for a shiny, golden crust.
- Serve warm for best taste and texture.
- Fresh herbs can be added to the filling or sprinkled on top for extra freshness.
