Description

These Halloween Spider Donuts are a fun and festive treat perfect for celebrating the spooky season. Moist chocolate donuts are topped with a rich chocolate glaze and decorated with candy eyes and black licorice strings to create spooky spider faces. Easy to make with simple ingredients, these donuts are perfect for a Halloween party or a fun treat for kids.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Toppings and Decoration

  • 1/2 cup chocolate glaze (melted chocolate or store-bought)
  • Candy eyes (for decoration)
  • Black licorice strings (for legs)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan to ensure your donuts don’t stick.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and granulated sugar until well combined and smooth.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In another bowl, whisk the eggs, buttermilk, vanilla extract, and melted butter together until fully combined.
  4. Combine wet and dry mixtures: Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing gently until just combined to avoid overmixing which can make the donuts tough.
  5. Fill the donut pan: Spoon the batter into each donut cavity, filling them about halfway to allow room for rising.
  6. Bake the donuts: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean.
  7. Decorate: Once the donuts have cooled slightly, dip each one into the chocolate glaze to coat the top. While the glaze is still wet, add candy eyes in the center and use black licorice strings to create spider legs, placing them strategically around the eyes.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the batter to keep the donuts light and fluffy.
  • Ensure donuts are cooled slightly before glazing to prevent the glaze from melting off.
  • If you don’t have a donut pan, you can use a round muffin pan but the shape will differ.
  • You can substitute buttermilk with milk plus 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar if needed.
  • Use flexible black licorice for easier shaping of the spider legs.
