Description

These Garlic Knot Rolls are soft, fluffy, and packed with buttery garlic flavor. Perfect as a side dish or appetizer, they’re easy to make from scratch with simple ingredients and a homemade garlic butter brush that enhances their delicious aroma and taste. Ideal for Italian-American meals or any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently, then let sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare dough: Add olive oil and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually stir in the flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms that is no longer sticky.
  3. Knead dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic, ensuring a uniform texture.
  4. First rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for approximately 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape knots: Punch down the risen dough to release air. Divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and tie into a loose knot, tucking the ends underneath for a neat appearance.
  6. Second rise: Arrange the knots on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them and allow to rise again for 20–30 minutes to become puffy.
  7. Preheat oven: While the dough rests, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) in preparation for baking.
  8. Bake rolls: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake the knots for 12–15 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
  9. Prepare garlic butter: While the rolls are baking, combine melted butter with minced garlic, chopped parsley, and salt to create the flavorful garlic butter.
  10. Brush and serve: As soon as the rolls come out of the oven and are hot, generously brush them with the garlic butter mixture. Optionally, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top. Serve warm for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • These garlic knots freeze well after baking—reheat in the oven at 350°F for 5–7 minutes for fresh-tasting rolls.
  • Adding Italian seasoning to the garlic butter adds an extra layer of flavor if desired.
