Description

A flavorful and spicy twist on the classic sloppy joe, this Delicious Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joes recipe features ground chicken cooked with aromatic vegetables and bold Cajun seasonings, simmered in a tangy tomato-based sauce, then served on toasted buns with optional toppings for a satisfying and easy weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Mixture

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

To Serve

  • 4 brioche or sandwich buns
  • Optional toppings: sliced pickles, coleslaw, or shredded cheese

Instructions

  1. Sauté Vegetables: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and diced green and red bell peppers. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
  2. Add Garlic and Chicken: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until aromatic. Add the ground chicken to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes until the chicken is fully cooked through and nicely browned.
  3. Season and Simmer: Sprinkle in the Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to coat the meat evenly. Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and apple cider vinegar. Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 5 to 7 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken slightly and flavors to meld.
  4. Prepare Buns and Serve: Toast the brioche or sandwich buns if desired. Spoon the Cajun chicken mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the buns. Add your preferred toppings such as sliced pickles, coleslaw, or shredded cheese. Cover with the top bun and serve hot for a delicious and comforting meal.

Notes

  • Adjust the spice level by using more or less Cajun seasoning according to your taste preference.
  • For a low-carb option, serve the filling over rice or in lettuce wraps instead of buns.
  • Using brioche buns adds a slightly sweet contrast to the spicy filling, but any sandwich bun works well.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
