Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 8 ounces lump crab meat (picked over for shells)
- 4 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 2 green onions (finely chopped)
- 1 garlic clove (minced)
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Assembly
- 20 wonton wrappers
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Serving
- Sweet chili sauce or soy sauce (for dipping)
Instructions
- Prepare the Filling: In a medium mixing bowl, combine lump crab meat, softened cream cheese, finely chopped green onions, minced garlic, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Old Bay seasoning, and black pepper. Mix everything thoroughly until well blended.
- Assemble the Wontons: Place a wonton wrapper on a clean, flat surface. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the crab filling into the center of the wrapper. Lightly brush the edges of the wrapper with water to help seal it. Fold the wrapper into a triangle or gather the corners together, pinching to seal tightly, ensuring no filling escapes during frying. Repeat this process for all wrappers and filling.
- Heat the Oil: Pour 2 to 3 inches of vegetable oil into a deep skillet or pot. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain the correct temperature for optimal frying.
- Fry the Wontons: Carefully add the wontons to the hot oil in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry each batch for 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally with a slotted spoon, until they become golden brown and crispy on all sides.
- Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the cooked wontons from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve the crispy crab appetizers immediately while hot, accompanied by sweet chili sauce or soy sauce for dipping.
Notes
- For a lighter option, bake wontons at 400°F for 12 to 15 minutes instead of frying.
- Imitation crab can be used, but lump crab meat offers superior flavor.
- Serve the appetizers immediately to enjoy their crispiness.
