Ingredients
Scale
Green Beans
- 1 lb fresh or frozen green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
Casserole Mixture
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 1/3 cups French-fried onions, divided
- Optional: 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese (for extra flavor)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare it for baking the casserole.
- Prepare Green Beans: Blanch fresh green beans in boiling water for 4-5 minutes until tender-crisp, or thaw and drain frozen green beans thoroughly.
- Mix Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, ground black pepper, and 2/3 cup of French-fried onions. Stir in the cooked green beans and, if using, the grated cheddar cheese until evenly mixed.
- Assemble Casserole: Pour the green bean and soup mixture into a 9×9-inch baking dish, spreading evenly.
- Bake Initial: Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until it becomes hot and bubbly throughout.
- Add Topping and Finish Baking: Sprinkle the remaining French-fried onions over the casserole and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until the onions turn golden brown and crispy.
- Serve: Remove from oven and allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Blanching fresh green beans helps retain their bright color and texture.
- If using frozen green beans, make sure to thaw and drain well to avoid excess moisture in the casserole.
- Cheddar cheese is optional but adds a nice extra flavor for those who enjoy a cheesy twist.
- For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free French-fried onions and verify the soup ingredients.
- This dish can be prepared a day ahead and baked before serving for convenience.
