Description

This Classic Patty Melt recipe features juicy, seasoned ground beef patties topped with sweet caramelized onions and melted Swiss or cheddar cheese, all sandwiched between buttery toasted rye or sourdough bread. A perfect blend of savory flavors and textures, ideal for a comforting lunch or casual dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Caramelized Onions

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Pinch of sugar (optional)

For Assembling & Grilling

  • 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • 4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to keep patties tender.
  2. Shape Patties: Form the mixture into 2 large patties that are slightly larger than the bread slices to account for shrinkage during cooking.
  3. Caramelize the Onions: Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook them slowly for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and sweet. Optionally, add a pinch of sugar to enhance caramelization.
  4. Cook the Patties: Using the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side or until they reach your preferred doneness. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer a slice of cheese, a beef patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out.
  6. Grill the Patty Melts: Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches on the skillet and grill for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted.
  7. Serve: Remove sandwiches from skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot alongside fries, pickles, or a crisp salad.

Notes

  • Using rye or sourdough bread adds a nice tangy flavor; however, you can substitute with your preferred hearty bread.
  • Be sure to cook onions low and slow to achieve deep caramelization without burning.
  • Butter the bread generously for an even, golden-toast finish.
  • You can add a slice of tomato or mustard for extra flavor if desired.
  • Adjust seasoning of patties according to your taste preferences.
