Description

Cheesy Jalapeno Popper Puff Pastry Straws are a deliciously flaky and spicy appetizer perfect for parties or snack time. These golden twists combine creamy cheddar and cream cheese with zesty jalapeños, wrapped in buttery puff pastry, baked to crispy perfection and garnished with fresh chives for an extra burst of flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1–2 jalapeños, finely chopped (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Pastry & Topping

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon chopped chives or green onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Make the Filling: In a medium bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, chopped jalapeños (with seeds removed for mild heat), minced garlic, smoked paprika, and salt. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and well incorporated.
  3. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet and gently roll it out to form a rectangle approximately 10 by 12 inches, preparing it to hold the filling evenly.
  4. Add Filling and Fold: Spread the prepared cream cheese mixture evenly over one half of the puff pastry. Carefully fold the other half over the filling and press gently along the edges and surface to seal and slightly flatten the layers using a rolling pin.
  5. Slice and Twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the filled and folded pastry into strips about 1/2 inch wide. Gently twist each strip to create the signature spiral shape and arrange them on the lined baking sheet.
  6. Apply Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and milk. Brush this egg wash over each twisted strip to give them a shiny, golden finish as they bake.
  7. Bake the Straws: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
  8. Cool and Garnish: Remove the straws from the oven and allow them to cool slightly on a wire rack. Optionally, sprinkle with chopped chives or green onions before serving warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Can be prepared ahead and stored in the refrigerator before baking.
  • Leftover straws reheat well in the oven to restore crispness.
  • For more heat, retain jalapeño seeds or add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the filling.
