Description

This Better Than Anything Toffee is a deliciously rich and crunchy treat that’s quick to make and perfect for sharing. With a buttery caramel base topped with melted chocolate and crunchy nuts, it’s a classic dessert that satisfies any sweet tooth with its perfect blend of textures and flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Toffee Base

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Topping

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent the toffee from sticking and to make cleanup easier.
  2. Melt the Butter and Cook Sugar: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the granulated sugar and cook constantly for 8 to 10 minutes until the mixture turns a golden brown color and pulls away from the sides of the pan, indicating the toffee is ready.
  3. Pour the Toffee: Quickly pour the hot toffee mixture onto the prepared baking sheet and spread it out evenly to about 1/4-inch thickness to ensure even cooling and texture.
  4. Add Chocolate Chips: Immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let them sit for 2 to 3 minutes to melt, then use a spatula to spread the chocolate smoothly over the surface.
  5. Add Nuts and Salt: Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the melted chocolate, and add flaky sea salt if using to enhance the flavors.
  6. Cool and Store: Allow the toffee to cool completely, then break it into pieces. Store the pieces in an airtight container to keep them fresh.

Notes

  • Use a candy thermometer to ensure the toffee reaches the right temperature (around 300°F) for a perfect hard crack stage.
  • Swap pecans for walnuts or almonds according to your preference.
  • Flaky sea salt is optional but adds a nice contrast to the sweetness.
  • Store the toffee in a cool, dry place to prevent melting or stickiness.
  • Be careful when handling hot sugar mixtures to avoid burns.
