Description

These Amish Onion Fritters are crispy, savory treats that make a delicious appetizer or side dish. Made with sweet onions and a flavorful batter, these fritters are fried to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups finely chopped sweet onions

Additional:

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the milk and egg. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until combined. Fold in the chopped onions.
  3. Fry Fritters: Heat oil in a skillet. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, flatten slightly, and fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Drain and Serve: Remove fritters with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels, and serve warm with optional dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Use Vidalia or other sweet onions for best flavor.
  • Best served immediately but can be kept warm in a 200°F oven while frying the rest.
